Chaga Quest in the White Mountains

Saturday, March 26, 2022
12-3pm EST

March may not be peak mushroom foraging season in most New Englanders' minds but the value of the fungi that are available at this time should not be underestimated. One of them is chaga (Inonotus obliquus)—the name used to describe a medicinal fungus that has become increasingly popular for combating cancer, gastrointestinal illnesses, skin difficulties, and sugar dysregulation in the body. A staple of folk medicine traditions in Siberia and in a host of other regions around the globe, chaga also grows across the U.S. on the trunks of birch trees, making it visible even in the dead of winter after abundant snow has fallen.

Join fellow Outdoor Afro Trip Leader Mardi Fuller and I for a hike through part of the White Mountains National Forest (NH) where our aim will be to locate, harvest, and prepare this treasured medicinal fungus; explore some of the folk traditions surrounding its use;  and have a lot of fun along the way.
